ABSTRACT

Legal requirements exist in the United Kingdom regarding clinical facilities for children. In the United Kingdom, there is a genetic counselling and clinical genetics centres in every healthcare region, usually based in the medical teaching centre of the region concerned and commonly staffed by, or closely associated with, an academic medical genetics unit. The keeping of accurate and complete records is an essential part of all branches of clinical medicine, but the long-term and preventive nature of medical genetics makes this an especially important aspect. The necessity of adequate time usually means that a specific session is best set aside for genetic counselling, whether this be in a medical genetics centre, a family doctor's office or surgery, or in a hospital clinician's outpatient department. The revolution in information technology has been both a blessing and a problem for the field of genetic counselling.
