ABSTRACT

Reduced arterial blood flow, often from the accumulation of plaque (atherosclerosis), is a major health concern that is treated by surgery (by-pass) or by inserting a drug eluting stent where the blockage of blood flow has occurred. This chapter formulates a three delay partial differential equation model to represent the stent drug coating and the adjacent arterial wall. The spatial domain is modeled as two concentric cylinders. The inner cylinder is the coating on the stent external surface that contains the drug. The outer concentric cylinder in the arterial wall receives the drug from the stent. The chapter considers the statement of the model and discusses a method of lines implementation in R.
