ABSTRACT

Dominique Morisseau pursued acting, but when she discovered good roles for women of color were lacking, she decided to write plays and create roles for actors of color. She is currently expanding her platform, having moved from Detroit to New York to Los Angeles to start writing for television. Theatre, however, remains her true passion and the place she feels she can best propel her vision and her activism. Dominique Morisseau’s plays have been produced on and off Broadway, and all over America. Her characters are incredibly human, and her language seamlessly blends poetry, heart, and soul. Dominique Morisseau masterfully combines the challenges and dangers of the public school system with the heartbreaking emotional reality of a black teenager threatened by an environment where he feels he doesn’t belong, and a mother who desperately wants only the best for her child.
