ABSTRACT

The development of a framework for life-cycle resilience assessment of civil infrastructures under hazard effects is of great importance and briefly addressed in this chapter. The central issue underlying the importance of a resilience-informed approach is the need for making informed decisions regarding the design, assessment, and management of civil infrastructure. Several significant developments are summarized, including resilience quantification and performance-based engineering of civil infrastructure. Furthermore, the decision variables (e.g., resilience, sustainability) are quantified at component-level and compared with the system-level approach considering structural performance and resilience in a unified framework. The proposed approach can aid the development of the next generation of performance-based engineering, incorporating both resilience and sustainability in a life-cycle context.
