ABSTRACT

‘Community’ is a vibrant site for the intersection of creative practices and geographical research. Here we find everything from geographers enrolling creative practices as part of their participatory action research, to collaborations with community-based arts organisations. Foregrounding community, as a site for the intersection of geographical research and creative practices, offers the chance to explore the potential of rich exchanges between the practices and literatures across the diversity of participatory art and participatory geography. It is interesting that participatory geographies, including those that enrol creative practices, raise similar questions for geographic research as participatory art raised for the art world. These include the impact of shifting forms of research production, the nature of ‘outputs’ and diverse relationships with participants. Bringing together participatory art and participatory geographies results in the emergence of nuanced discussions about relations between process and output.
