An Intuitive Information Space Navigation Method based on the Window Metaphor
In this paper, a new navigation method with a portable information terminal for 3D information space has been proposed. With the method, a user can look around the information space by moving the terminal itself. Furthermore he/she can look into the information space through the display of the terminal as if to look into the outer space through a real window. In order to realize the proposed navigation method, direction of the terminal was measured by a 3D angular accelerometer and user's viewpoint was detected by image processing of a video captured image. Usability of an interface using the proposed method was compared with that of a traditional button interface experimentally. From the subjective evaluations, the information space navigation of the proposed method was easier and more interesting than that of the traditional button interface.
