Providing Traffic and Route Guidance Information to Tourists
Traffic and route guidance information is highly relevant for tourists driving in unfamiliar traffic networks. Advanced traffic technology enables adaptation of driver support to both the current situation on the roads and information preferences of road users. In a stepwise procedure it was examined in what way route guidance information should be provided and displayed in an international traffic corridor. Native and non-native drivers as well as traffic experts from several European countries rated content and layout of 12 different versions of a Full Colour Information Panel (FCIP). Four optimised FCIP versions and their effect on driver behaviour were then tested in a driving simulator experiment. This article summarises the experimental phases and the guidelines that were extracted from the results.
