chapter  16
Inspection, test, and rework operations
Pages 20

Contrary to the impression conveyed by most of the literature on lean manufacturing, it does not make inspection, test and rework go away. These operations remain for many reasons — including explicit demands from customers — and therefore command attention from line designers. They differ from production operations in that their durations vary from piece topiece, they generate a flow of rejects to dispose of, they generate information about process conditions that must be exploited, and their effective execution requires a fault-finding mindset.
