Manufacturing execution systems have evolved to fill the communication gap between the manufacturing planning system (MRP, MRPII, ERP, etc.) and the control systems used to run equipment on the plant floor. Previously, these were the tools production management was given, along with a lot of printed paper and many disparate pieces of information such as statistical process control (SPC), time and attendance, receiving reports, inspection reports, etc., to accomplish the production task. It was up to production to determine how to tie all the information together.
