ABSTRACT

Although enormous progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, it remains the leading cause of death worldwide (1). Despite advances in current imaging modalities, the ability to identify patients who are at high risk for a future acute coronary event is still limited mainly because these events may occur as the fi rst manifestation of coronary atherosclerosis in previously apparently asymptomatic individuals with non-fl ow-limiting plaques (2).
