In an earlier chapter I have said that I was not brought up in any religion, and at home with my parents we did not go to church. At Clifton College, however, Sunday chapel was compulsory and I left school very familiar with the prayer book service, and with an enduring affection for it, which was also strongly felt by Ruth. None the less, until about my fiftieth year, I do not remember having any interest in organized religion.
