ABSTRACT

In the article by Richard A. Gray, also included in this issue of The Reference Librarian, 1 questions are raised about certain policies and decisions regarding the preparation and application of the 19th edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and about changes and revisions which have been introduced in Editions 16 through 19. Such policies and decisions have an impact on the organization of libraries that use the system, the quality of service provided to users of these libraries, and—apropos of the relationship between reference and technical services—the work of reference librarians and others involved in public service.
