ABSTRACT

The relationship between technical service and public service operations is unique in each library setting contingent upon communication lines and organizational design. The services, though different, share the common goal of providing service to the library patron. A study conducted by Marjorie Murfin stresses it is a misconception that placing a title in the stacks automatically assures accessibility to library patrons. Patron frustration is particularly high in retrieving serial and periodical literature held in library collections. Viewed in this way, the expertise of serial librarians in organizing library serial collections compliments and aids reference librarians in effectively assisting patrons in locating needed material. The assumption that “if they don’t find it they’ll ask” was not supported by the Murfin study, therefore, improving public catalog access, serials subscription lists, and the organization of serial collections is essential for increasing patron success in retrieving serial publications. 1
