ABSTRACT

The primary audience for an assessment report is usually the student and her/his family so endeavor to write clearly and simply. Well-intended educational therapists can feel thwarted when they share their assessment results with a school district. They have prepared a very thoughtful and nuanced description of why the student is struggling. A high-quality assessment report should resonate deeply with parents. The focus of the recommendations is on the specific person evaluated. Recommendations are developed for the individual, are guided by the specific referral questions, and should follow directly from the summarized findings. Public school special educators are required to write a broad goal statement that includes a specific goal and measurable outcome. Crafting a well-written report is a complex endeavor. It requires thoughtful analysis, strong writing skills, detailed descriptions of the student’s strengths and weaknesses, and it must be internally consistent.
