ABSTRACT

The benefits of extensive reading are straightforward, implementing a program can present a number of challenges. For academic programs where assigning grades to learners is expected, such as universities and high schools, tracking students’ reading progress is necessary. Some teachers consider that they should also read quietly during an extensive reading session to act as a model for the learners. Some researchers have suggested that almost all of the course time should be spent on extensive reading or extensive listening. Every so often, the teacher should look at learners’ report sheets, or talk quietly with the learners individually to see that they are reading enough and that they are reading at the right level. The teacher should also check to see that each learner is doing some reading for fluency development. Teachers can look for learners who turn pages slowly, or look in their dictionary too often, or who look disinterested in their book and go and talk to them.
