ABSTRACT

Vocabulary learning during reading depends to some degree on guessing from context. The learning occurred across a range of aspects of vocabulary knowledge. It is important to see vocabulary learning through extensive reading as being just one of the many kinds of learning that can occur through extensive reading. T. Nakanishi in a meta-analysis of 34 studies of extensive reading found that overall, learners in an extensive reading program out-performed other learners. R. Zahar, T. Cobb, and N. Spada make the case for deliberate learning and lexically supported reading. If vocabulary learning is one of the goals of extensive reading, learners should use dictionary look-up or consult a gloss. The vocabulary learning effects of extensive reading are most likely to be noticeable in extended extensive reading courses. This is because of the repetition effects of substantial amounts of input.
