ABSTRACT

Of the four seasons of the year there are two which lend themselves best to the comfortable occupation of reading. While spring and fall seem to place heavy demands on one to spend much time preparing for the growing season and clearing up after the harvest, the other two seasons offer time for the enjoyment of that gentle art which both rests and invigorates the mind. Within the winter season there are special times when reading offers different kinds of enjoyment. The first blustery weekends of December bring about a sense of security when those stormy days are viewed from the vantage point of a comfortable chair beside a warming fire. And in that security the joy of a good book is peculiarly heightened and transformed into miraculous wonderment. Later in that season when long days of storm make even contemplation of outdoor activity unattractive, then the good companions on our bookshelves provide us with great satisfaction.
