ABSTRACT

It is a paradox that there are books which are not really meant to be read. For what purpose, one may well ask, would a printer lay down his columns of type with such painstaking care if he did not intend the resulting work to be read. Yet a great many books have been issued not to be read rather as a means of honoring the work thus issued. Other books, especially those to be found in the class known as incunabula, doubtless were intended to be read, but now have become so rare or so honored as to make them unreadable.
