ABSTRACT
Islam is important for many reasons, first for its contributions to world civilization and second because a large population of the world inhabits the Muslim world, which imperialism wants to destroy. Imperialism essentializes Islam only to demonize it. In the same mirror image, political Islam condemns Europe and modernity. This chapter states there is no homogenous Islam that either could be celebrated without questioning its basis or demonized. It claims that Marxism offers to the entire world radical possibilities of human development that neither liberal democracy nor Islam can offer, but this form of Marxism has to be freed from all remnants of Stalinism. And just as Marxism has to free itself from the despotism of Stalin that created a caricatured version of Marxism, so to one has to free oneself from the dogmas of theological and political Islam.
