ABSTRACT

The first part of Chapter 2 outlines the coach learning the ins and outs of what is printed in a score – the black and white. This means, in effect, learning what a singer will have to learn plus the accompaniment to that. It also means finding out what the piano-vocal score should show but doesn’t. The second part of Chapter 2 outlines the gray areas of a score a coach needs to learn: verbal nuances, musical traditions, and all aspects of dramatic situations. Source material that will help in both sections is mentioned here.
