ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the pioneers in aeroponics and the wide range of inventors who have converted new ideas into intellectual property. Again we see the trend is growing exponentially in the number of patents since 2001 in the field of aeroponics. This demonstrates several qualities of this technology. First, that it is a new and emerging science with ample opportunities to invent and discover new ways to benefit from it. Second, there is a perception that this technology has potential for economic growth and expansion. Third, the need for improved food production methods is great. This chapter details the pioneering effort at Disneyworld and NASA to experiment with this soilless growing method and develop some unique approaches for utilizing it. It is noteworthy to see again the variety of patents that have been awarded for unique applications in aeroponics, including several patents related to new growing systems.
