ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of Ryan’s social experiences with peers, all diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, in AutPlay social skills group. AutPlay groups are not just about addressing social skill deficits and implementing structured interventions to improve deficits. This component is certainly present, but this alone does not provide the full description of AutPlay groups. The ability for a childlike Ryan to experience enjoyment in a social world that has historically represented hurt and confusion is the greatest testament to the success of AutPlay groups. It represents the value and importance of facilitating AutPlay groups in communities across the world and providing more narratives like Ryan’s experience. AutPlay play and social skills groups provide the design and protocol for professionals to assist children and adolescents in gaining the skills they need while respecting and valuing them as unique individuals. The ultimate accomplishment of AutPlay groups is helping these children feel confident and secure in social navigation.
