ABSTRACT

American Management Systems, a large consulting firm based in Fairfax, Virginia, has been involved with knowledge management since 1993. A key to creating knowledge is to tap the pool of tacit knowledge and convert it into explicit knowledge. Structured and unstructured interviewing techniques can be used to identify the tacit knowledge and externalize it. Synthesizing knowledge from the external environment to create value internally to the organization is an important form of knowledge creation. New knowledge should ensue through the stimulation of novel ideas and through the combination of existing knowledge. In order to develop organizational intelligence, there must be processes and systems in place to facilitate the “creation” of knowledge. Organizational intelligence is an organization’s capability to process, interpret, encode, manipulate, and access information in a purposeful, goal-directed manner, so it can increase its adaptive potential in the environment in which it operates.
