ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses ways of capturing knowledge. The most typical method for capturing knowledge is through structured and unstructured interviews. Questionnaires, surveys, and web-based observation forms are alternative techniques for capturing knowledge. Some knowledge can perhaps be gained through observing an expert solving a problem in his/her work environment. Perhaps through an apprenticeship, mentoring, or on-the-job training, the knowledge engineer may be able to pick up some insights and knowledge used by the expert, as the knowledge engineer learns directly from the expert. Many leading organizations are discovering that they need to do a better job of capturing, distributing, sharing, preserving, securing, and valuing this precious knowledge in order to stay ahead, or at least survive, with their competition. Lessons-learned analysis is the key approach used for the creation and refinement of knowledge. Lessons-learned inventories are used for the storing of knowledge in the organization.
