ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion on clustering techniques. Idiolinkage refers to the process of successive aggregation in which items are assembled, step-by-step, into groups or buckets under the guidance of an ordering of the length of the links involved and with an overriding preference for linking individuals (when modified; individuals or groups of two) rather than larger groups. The simplest form is ‘nearest’ idiolinkage, in which only links from one item to another arise. If two lists are maintained, one of items (and of group characteristics) and the other of links in order of closeness, the nearest idiolinkage process is relatively simple. The difference between centroid and nearest idiolinkages is an emphasis on centre of gravity rather than nearest vertex.
