ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors focus on modes of expression associated with integer values of Q, going, for instance, from raw to square-root to logarithm with no attention to intermediate steps. Hybrid expressions of counts, square-root like below the matching point and logarithmic above it, seem to do very well. Such hybrids are, of course, another form of interpolation since shoving the matching point leftward moves toward the simple mode of expression used on the right, while moving it rightward moves us toward the mode of expression used on the left. The authors aim to diagnose separately, data at low and middle ranges of response on the one hand and at middle and high levels on the other. Formulating this with an overlap, a middle range that contributes to both diagnoses, is essential, because the strength of our diagnostic procedures is rapidly reduced by constricting the range covered.
