ABSTRACT

Interest in the role of taurine has surged during the last decade, with several international meetings and books being devoted to it. 1–6 Major areas of interest include taurine’s function in excitable tissues, such as retina, brain, and heart, its function in development, and its importance, if any, as a nutrient. The following discussion will focus chiefly on the latter possibility, although overlap with other functions, especially during development, is inevitable.
