ABSTRACT

The layman might conclude from the title “The limits of vision with two eyes”, that the limits of vision with one eye are perfectly known already. An important criticism concerns the guessing component in the subjects responses. In fact the conclusion is that the classical model of probability summation as used by Pirenne can not be used as a proper baseline. An influencing study has been the work of F. W. Campbell and D. G. Green, in which they compared contrast sensitivity for gratings under monocular and binocular viewing conditions. They measured contrast thresholds for the detection of spatial, sinusoidally modulated luminance gratings. The role of colour in stereopsis has a history, very distinct from all other aspects. Research in this issue has been of much importance for theories about the influence of colour in pattern recognition in general.
