ABSTRACT

Digital social innovation is an emerging field that uses digital tools for social change. This innovation could be developed to help society to dispose and collect recyclable waste as well. From our survey on waste disposal in Malaysia, however, we have found that there is no application available for the society to properly dispose and collect the household recyclable waste. This study aims to design a solution in order to provide them with a mobile application that could be used to track content levels of recycling bins in their locations. The application is developed based on rapid application development methodology. At the end of the study, we propose and discuss a model that could be applied by other societies to achieve the same goal. We conclude that an affordable digital social solution could be implemented by leveraging current open-source tools, low-cost hardware, crowdsourcing and cloud technologies.
