ABSTRACT

The traditional batik motif is moving in a direction in which the market demands new designs without diminishing its distinctiveness. The main obstacle is the limitations of craftsmen in developing new ideas, as they still tend to be conservative both in thinking and competency. As a solution, technology can be used to form a design using j-Batik software that is able to produce many motif variations more quickly and easily. However, it raises other problems, that is, how to persuade the craftsmen to make batik with a new motif that had never been made before. The experimental approach used here was based on diffusion innovation theory, and the study concluded it can appropriately be applied to a group of traditional batik craftsmen in responding to the innovation. In addition, the craftsmen can engage in more dynamic thought to move out of their own conventional customary habits.
