ABSTRACT

Saint Bartholomew used darkness to prevent the Saracens from capturing the ship carrying his relics. Saint Severinus and Saint Constantius provoked a violent storm with big hailstones that pushed back the Muslim ships heading to Capri. The Lord and the saints provided a fundamental help on the battlefield as well. A decisive role in the victory of an army of Sorrentines, Gaetans, and Neapolitans against the Saracens is attributed to Saint Antoninus and other saints whose bodies were preserved in Sorrento. In the mid-tenth century, Saint Januarius and Saint Agrippinus had the biggest ship of the Saracen fleet sunk while it was moving towards the walls of Naples. This event cheered up the Neapolitans, who found the strength to repel their enemies’ assault. Supernatural events regarding a monk of Montecassino who died in captivity in Africa and was buried in a local church demonstrating that God had not forgotten those who died in Muslim lands.
