ABSTRACT

Media literacy is about critical discourse and enhanced perspectives on vital issues that exist in our mediated and unmediated worlds. The lack and type of representation by the media has been an ongoing issue. A wider discussion ensued of how media literacy education can help to serve as a way for difficult dialogues to occur, with ground rules established that a group would accept as norms. Suggestions were made about education, whether it was in communication, media studies, or in other courses. Classrooms, whether K-12, higher education, or in non-traditional routes, were considered good places to facilitate these conversations: conversations that become extremely important for how people can share about themselves and their world. Truth itself has become contested with the arguments about fake news and other issues. Connecting the voices of researchers has been a primary goal for media literacy educator advocates. This chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
