ABSTRACT

Many three-dimensional (3D) tissue culture platforms focus on large scale tissue replicas. Yet, there is a niche for smaller systems as they have distinct applications for high-throughput screening and individualized medicine. This chapter seeks to review several technologies associated with 3D bioprinting with emphasis on microscale 3D tissue culture. First, we discuss the equipment and materials that are used in the microarray 3D bioprinting, which is the miniature 3D bioprinting technology demonstrated on microarray biochips. This technology will be followed by the methods of data acquisition and analysis for the bioprinted tissue replicas. Finally, we discuss the applications of microarray 3D bioprinting in engineering and medicine. Ultimately, this technology provides a way to model several disease states in high throughput, which can make diagnosis and treatment of any examined illness simpler and cheaper.
