ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an exercise to sing the five seventh chord qualities on a single root pitch by lowering only one pitch in each seventh chord. Syncopation is the rhythmic practice of emphasizing a note by length on a weak beat or a weak portion of a beat. An exercise is provided to recite rhythms while conducting or tapping the beat. The chapter discusses the cadential six-four formula and the pedal six-four formula. Both these harmonic formulas have a change of harmony over a repeated bass pitch; the cadential six-four repeats the dominant pitch beneath a two-chord formula and the pedal six-four repeats the tonic pitch beneath a two-chord formula. The chapter presents the defining features of the cadential six-four chord, which is the most common second inversion.
