ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a singing exercise to be practiced using the neutral syllable "la" while distinguishing clearly between the half step and the whole step. There are two types of meters (time signatures) commonly in use today, which are distinguished as simple meter and compound meter. They generally come in duple, triple, and quadruple meters for both types (number of beats per measure). Simple and compound meters are distinguished by how the beat is divided. The chapter also includes an exercise to conduct a duple pattern while listening to the third movement of Brahms Symphony No. 1.
