ABSTRACT

There are numerous extensions of all diatonic triads beyond the dominant including 9th, 11th, and 13th chords. This chapter focuses on the most common of these, the dominant 9th, flat 9th, the dominant 13th, and flat 13th. At the very least, however, an harmonic extension will have a root, 3rd, 7th, and its extension (9th or 13th). Compositions with dominant extensions are likely to include those extensions on the supertonic. Not only does this give harmonic consistency to this language, but it also provides logical voice leading with this kind of harmony. The chapter also presents singing exercises of arpeggiating supertonic 9th chords on a neutral syllable.
