ABSTRACT

Any concept in music theory is always better understood when reinforced with the musicianship skills of singing and dictation. This is especially true of interval analysis and identification. This chapter provides singing exercises and melodies designed to reinforce understanding of interval and interval quality. In the study of major and minor scales, the most important building block is the interval of a second. An interval has two designations; a numerical and a quality designation. The numerical value indicates the number of letter names spanned in an interval. The two forms of the minor scale include the harmonic minor, which maintains a lowered sixth scale degree (as in the natural minor) but adds the leading tone, and the melodic minor, which raises both scale degree six and seven, especially in scalar patterns ascending toward tonic.
