ABSTRACT
Having once decided on an overall vision, a “what” we are aiming for in terms of area-based conservation, it is important to consider more clearly why this is needed, where it needs to take place and how area-based conservation might be managed and governed. Some initial thoughts are given. Finally, we look in a little more detail at the question of whether or not naturalness retains any relevance in a rapidly changing planet.
