ABSTRACT

There is all too often an aura of suspicion about conservation and the people who advocate its practice (Moore, 1968). It has been regarded as a minority interest, practised by people whose sole intent appears to be the imposition of limits or restraints upon the personal freedom of others. The commonplace understanding of conservation is associated, for example, with not being allowed to cut down trees, not killing whales, not demolishing old, derelict buildings or not releasing pollutants to the atmosphere.
