ABSTRACT

This chapter presents first law analysis of systems containing different pure substances, namely, ideal gases, ideal gas mixtures and two phase mixtures of water and refrigerant R134a. The displacement work W is the sum of the displacement work in that part of the system that is inside the line and that part next to the piston. As the vapor is compressed isothermally, it condenses. Since the specific volume of the liquid is less than that of the vapor, the reduction in the volume due to compression is accommodated by the reduction in the volume occupied on account of the condensation and the pressure thus remains the same until all the vapor has condensed.
