ABSTRACT

This chapter presents first law analysis of steady and unsteady flow processes. The steady flow analysis involves flow devices that are used extensively in practical applications. Nozzles are quite extensively used in propulsion applications for generating thrust. A convergent nozzle is used in aircraft engines whereas a convergentdivergent nozzle is used in rocket engines. Diffusers are quite extensively used in the intake of engines for aircrafts and missiles that fly at supersonic speeds. The function of the diffuser is to decelerate the air that enters the engine and convert the KE of the incoming air stream into enthalpy. A mixing chamber is a chamber in which a high enthalpy and a low enthalpy stream are mixed to get an intermediate enthalpy stream. Throttling is a process in which a pure substance at a high pressure and temperature is very quickly converted to a low pressure, low temperature state with enthalpy almost remaining constant.
