ABSTRACT

Formed in 1962, the Serials Department in the University Library at UCLA consisted of a periodicals service and a unit that acquired current serials subscriptions for most libraries at UCLA. Later, a newspaper collection was added as was the exchanges program. Subsequent to the implementation of UCLA’s automated system, ORION, the Serials Department assumed responsibility for most aspects of serials acquisitions and collection maintenance in the University Research Library but no longer ordered or received paid serials subscriptions for branch libraries. The department now consists of two divisions, one handling public service and collection maintenance, the other, acquisitions.
