ABSTRACT

Three university libraries, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University joined forces in a three-year serials data conversion project, funded by an HEA Title II-C grant. In spite of the difficulties of working with large and cumbersome files and in spite of the long distance between the two northern California libraries and UCLA, the libraries successfully converted major portions of their manually generated serials files to machine-readable form, integrated the newly created records into a single file, and also developed practical techniques which could be utilized in future cooperative activities. Some of the problems identified by project managers are reported, particularly those related to staffing, organization, and the characteristics of large, time-worn serials files.
