ABSTRACT

Though the OCLC data base of serial records has improved somewhat over the past two years, it is still hampered by serious problems that allow paper bibliographies to compete with it on an equal footing. A sample of forty-two cessations listed in a recent issue of Ulrich’s Quarterly compared against the OCLC data base showed only nineteen percent of the OCLC records to be up to date. Though the data base has improved in its ability to keep pace with title changes, it has shown no improvement in supplying cataloguers with records that contain call numbers and subject headings in Library of Congress form. The system also exhibits a number of peculiarities that make it difficult to use.
