ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss what makes a game transgressive and what characterizes different forms of transgressive games. We argue that due to fact that whether something is transgressive is contextually dependent, it is impossible to make a canonical description of transgressive video games. Building on the discussions in Chapter 2, we present the games used in our empirical studies – why they were selected, in what ways they can be understood as transgressive, and how the player participants responded to the games. We also discuss the limitations of our selected material and what kinds of potentially transgressive games have been excluded from our empirical study.
