ABSTRACT

In-service training plays a pivotal role in the preparation of public services staff in libraries. This paper will define training and focus on the planning process necessary for the effective development and implementation of on-the-job training programs, including the goals of a training program, the general and specific behavioral objectives of a program, and the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by all public services positions for effective service within varied library environments. Part II of the paper will discuss the selection of appropriate training techniques and formats and concentrate on the use of video as a training tool and the practical training applications that have been developed within the library world and in other sectors. Video is a promising tool which should be utilized for training purposes.
