ABSTRACT

The position of Women’s Studies Librarian-at-Large for the University of Wisconsin System embodies a philosophy of cooperative library service, melded with a vision of women’s studies as an integral part of the liberal arts curriculum. As a specialized program geared to a statewide academic user group, the Office of the Librarian-at-Large is an innovative alternative to a special collection in women’s studies. How do the unique services of this office compare with the services and resources that come with the establishment of a separate collection? This article will attempt to answer this question by placing the discussion of the history and services of the Office of the Women’s Studies Librarian-at-Large within a broader and comparative context of library services to women’s studies.
