ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 asks What is the difference between dystopian and non-dystopian modes of characterization? The chapter shows how Nineteen Eighty-Four repurposes themes and structures from Orwell’s non-dystopian works, focusing on the continuities and disjunctures that distinguish dystopian character from the types of character found in other forms of fiction. The chapter shows how the dystopia both critiques and affirms the novel as vehicle for transmitting an inherited idea of the human by altering the characteristic relation between character and setting.
