ABSTRACT

The pupils had responded, and 'tested' for elasticity. In the second term, they had attempted 'take-overs', and brought on a 'purge'. The pupil cohort becomes increasingly distinguished by divisions as individuals and groups make their adaptations. The pupils engaged in some new strategies of deviance in this summer term. Perhaps the most extreme was 'skiving' off from school generally, or from particular lessons. Pupils, especially the deviants, had refined their 'work avoidance' strategies by this stage. They continued to exploit and extend the space around lessons in various ways. Pupils continued to disrupt the official reality and redefine situations by 'mucking about' in lessons. Inevitably, the opportunities were greater in craft lessons. Pupils were far more willing to be deviant, and to engage in the strongest actions, in the low priority areas of the curriculum, for example, music.
