ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to welding processes and their importance in various industries. The evolution of welding through civilization and historical developments in the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process are described. Common fusion welding processes such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), shielded arc welding (SAW), TIG, gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and plasma arc welding (PAW) are briefly discussed. Due to the heat input during welding, distinctive zones are produced in the weldments, which are also addressed in this chapter.
